Q4 Campaign 2020

Problem

In the fitness app world, Q4 is the graveyard of motivation. For Freeletics—an app historically rooted in outdoor, bodyweight training—the transition into winter is the hardest sell of the year.

Users are actively fighting freezing temperatures, early sunsets, and holiday lethargy. The challenge wasn't just to launch a seasonal promo; it was to stop the massive Q4 user drop-off.

We needed to convince a global user base that the cold wasn't a reason to quit, but the ultimate test of their discipline. We had to shift the narrative from "surviving the winter" to "conquering it."

Solution

You don't sell resilience by shooting in a warm, brightly lit studio. Director and DOP Kim Steinocher decided to lean entirely into the grit of the season.

Instead of faking the elements, we embraced the harsh realities of winter training—the visible breath in the freezing air, the dark, icy concrete, and the raw physical exhaustion.

We shot entirely on location, capturing an unapologetic, highly cinematic aesthetic that perfectly matched the hardcore DNA of the Freeletics community.

By visualizing the actual physical friction the users were facing out in the real world, we turned the brutal weather from an excuse to stay indoors into a badge of honor.

Results

Authentic Resilience

Delivered a visually striking, raw campaign that deeply resonated with the core community by refusing to sugarcoat the difficulty of winter training.

Churn Defense

Re-engaged the user base during the toughest quarter of the year by framing the cold as a challenge to be beaten, rather than an excuse to quit.

Cinematic Grit

Elevated the brand's visual language with premium, on-location cinematography that cut through the noise of overly polished, cheerful holiday fitness ads.
